The Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) Project marks a historic step in bridging the digital divide between the Indian mainland and the remote Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Implementation and Funding
- Funding: The project is funded by the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which supports rural and remote connectivity initiatives.
- Executing Agency: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was appointed as the project executing agency.
- Contractor: The work was awarded to NEC Corporation India Pvt. Ltd. through a Global Open Tendering process, ensuring world-class standards in submarine cable technology.
Major Activities Undertaken
- Marine Route Survey – Detailed seabed mapping to determine the safest and most efficient cable route.
- Submarine Cable Laying – Deployment of advanced ships and equipment to install fiber cables across the ocean floor.
- Civil Construction of Cable Landing Stations (CLS) – Establishing stations on each island for connectivity management.
- Installation, Testing & Commissioning – Deploying Submarine Line Terminal Equipment (SLTE) to ensure high-speed data transmission.
